Selly Park Property Owners’ Association exists for the benefit of all residents within the Selly Park covenanted and Conservation Area. SPPOA aims to preserve the unique character of the local area. We believe our environment is well worth protecting.
How do we do this?
SPPOA’s committee meets monthly to identify issues of concern. Representatives report on the activities of other local bodies such as the Community Partnership for Selly Oak and Selly Oak Ward meetings. We are working towards revising the Selly Park Character Appraisal Document in order to bring it into line with the City Council’s requirements and so reinforce the mandate of the Conservation Area.
SPPOA has had a history of tackling speeding, traffic safety and parking issues with some success. Due to the pressure of other major conservation and covenant issues we have approached John Gale to lead a dedicated group to address the increasing problem of street parking and speeding. We fully support the group called “Selly Car Park”. If anyone is interested in being involved then please email membership@sellypark.co.uk and your details will be passed on to John.
Many local residents are not aware that trees are protected from being cut down or having unapproved work done to them in Selly Park, as we are in a designated Conservation Area. SPPOA recently created a tree information leaflet, circulated to all Selly Park residents, to help awareness of concerns and queries about private trees locally. Following a generous donation SPPOA was able to create its own website www.sellypark.co.uk . There will now be monthly updates in its news section.
On behalf of SPPOA, the Committee comments on any proposal or planning application that threaten the covenants or Conservation Area. We encourage all SPPOA members to do so also. An increase in applications causing concern has led to our seeking the help of a planning advisor to assist in formulating our objections. The committee also take legal advice where necessary. All this costs money. We have therefore decided to increase our membership fees by the relatively modest sum of £5, but would rather enhance our ability to act by having more members, and thus more fees coming in.
Whether you’re new to Selly Park, or have lived in the area for some time, we would welcome your support. An increase in membership gives all residents the advantage of a stronger collective voice. The Selly Park Property Owners’ Association would welcome yours.
